Sharon (my wife) and I just returned from San Antonio where I attended the annual conference for the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.
http://www.aadsm.org/
This was the 19th annual conference for dentists that treat patients with sleep breathing disorders, usually Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It was a great meeting and we always enjoy going to San Antonio, as it is one of the 5 most unique cities in the US. Can you name the other 4?? (Answers at the end of the blog.)

The highlight of the trip turned out to be what happened on Saturday afternoon sitting out on the hotel’s patio and enjoying the river’s traffic. We were staying Hotel Contessa www.thehotelcontessa.com and came to realize that we were right next to Marriage Island. http://marriageisland.webs.com/ Marriage Island is a small (400 square foot) island that is ranked as 1 of the 10 most romantic destination wedding locations in the world!! Marriage Island is right on the edge of the river, next to Hotel Contessa and hosts 360 weddings every year.
During the 2 hours that Sharon and I sat on the patio we witnessed 3 weddings.
They took less than 30 minutes each and we saw a wide range of wardrobes. In each wedding the women were dressed to kill and they looked beautiful.
The men, on the other hand, had their own wardrobe ideas. One wore his cowboy hat, with a string tie; another wore khaki shorts with a long sleeve shirt, and another wore a shirt and tie. It was a wonderful afternoon and we were glad that we had front row seats to 3 weddings in a row.
The other 4 unique cities in the US–
New York, San Francisco, New Orleans, Las Vegas

I am sitting at home trying to decide what to do on this Memorial Day.
It has been called the “official” beginning of summer, of course, in Texas summer seems to start much earlier. However, Memorial Day is much more than that!! It was originally called Reconciliation Day. This was when people remembered all the fallen soldiers from the civil war. It is said to have begun in 1868. Women would place flowers on the graves at various cemeteries all over the country. Today it is the holiday that we remember all people that have sacrificed so much that we can live in this great country of ours.
I am so lucky that both my father and my father-in-law are still alive and well here in Bryan/College Station.
Robert Reece Howard Cargill
They both served their country in the military. Howard Cargill (my father-in-law) was in the Army at the end of World War II and Robert Reece (my father) was a career Air Force officer, proudly serving 26 years. I also served in the Air Force as a dentist for 4 years before coming to live in Bryan/College Station. All 3 of us are proud of our service in the military and have our names permanently inscribed at Veterans College Station.
As you enjoy this holiday, the “official” beginning of summer; please remember and thank those about which this holiday is truly about.

If you have visited this blog before you probably know that I am a clinical instructor at the Las Vegas Institure for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI). This past week I returned to LVI, not as an instructor but as a student. Sharon, my wife, went with me and we stayed at the Wynn Hotel, one of our favorite hotels in Las Vegas.
I was taking a class on full and partial dentures.
Too many times in the past, denture wearers did not have much choice in their treatment. No longer is that the case. People who still have all their teeth have lots of options today in their dental care. The same is true for 21st century denture wearers.
That is good news for the 25 million people who wear dentures in the US. It is estimated that 1/3 off all Americans over the age of 65 wear dentures today. They want to have natural, good looking teeth just like their friends who still have all their teeth. They also want to have teeth that function well and stay put, which allows them to eat nutritious meals, which will keep them healthier and live longer.
It is estimated that 50% of Americans are having trouble with their dentures.
That is probably because their dentures are too old. The life expectancy of well fitting dentures is 5-7 years. If your dentures are older than that, your mouth has changed enough to keep them from fitting like they did when they were made.
Please consult your dentist because poor fitting dentures not only don’t all you to enjoy your food, but cause your jaw bones to dissolve away at an alarming rate. Over time, this could lead to situations where it is almost impossible to retain dentures withour messy creams and adhesives.
If you or any one your know has dentures or is about to get dentures, please see your dentist and ask about the latest techniques in dentures. Just because you have lost your teeth, it doesn’t mean that you cannot have a beautiful smile and teeth that work well and stay put when you talk, laugh, and eat!!

How would you like to have straight teeth in only 6 months with clear braces? I am so excited to announce that we have become a provider of this great service. There are so many times that I talk to people who like the shape and color of their teeth, but they are crowded or have spaces. They are reluctant to have veneers placed on their teeth, but would love to have a nice smile with straight teeth. Well, now we have a solution for them.
Most adults are not against orthodontics to straighten their teeth, they just don’t want the metal mouth or have to wait 2 years.
Now, with 6 Month Smiles (adult cosmetic braces) you can get straighter teeth with clear braces and in as little as 6 months. We use clear brackets and tooth colored wires, so these braces are almost invisible.
Here, you can see the difference between traditional braces and 6 Month Smiles clear braces.
6 Month Smilesbraces cost less than traditional braces, take as little as 6 months, and tend to be less sore that traditional braces. This is possible because we are not moving back teeth or changing anyone’s bite.
They are not for growing children, rather they are Adult cosmetic braces. We are so glad to offer this additional service as we help people get the smile of their dreams!
